Lord, Guard My Heart

There’s a scripture that has carried me through one of the most challenging seasons of my life. It’s one my father and my late grandmother often shared with me, and it has stayed close to my heart ever since: Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

During that difficult period, I clung to those words. I began to meditate on them, declare them, and speak them over my life and over my situation. I asked Father God to guard my heart—guard it so bitterness would not take root… guard it so pain wouldn’t push me to say things I shouldn’t… guard it so I could continue to love, walk in love, and, most importantly, forgive those who had hurt me.

As I prayed this scripture over myself, the Lord truly did what I asked. He protected my heart. He kept it. He guarded it. And because of that, those heavy things never got the chance to settle in or take deep root. Because when bitterness takes root, it becomes hard to love, hard to forgive, and hard to open yourself up again.

But God desires to guard our hearts so we can walk in His perfect peace—and so we can love others just as Christ has loved us.

Be Blessed.
