A Life Fully Surrendered to Christ: We Must Pray

A life fully surrendered to Christ is rooted in relationship—and every healthy relationship requires communication. There is no greater or more powerful way to communicate with God than through prayer. Prayer is not optional for the believer; it is essential. It strengthens our relationship with God, aligns our hearts with His will, and reminds us daily of our dependence on Him.

God listens to each of us every day. Prayer is simply the open line of communication between our hearts and His.

“Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear your voice and listen to you.”
—Jeremiah 29:12

When we pray, we are not speaking into the void. We are speaking to a God who hears, who listens, and who responds according to His perfect will.

Seeking God Through Prayer

Scripture calls us to seek God continually—not occasionally or only in moments of desperation.

“Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore.”

—1 Chronicles 16:11

To seek God “evermore” means always, continually. But how do we pray at all times when life is busy, responsibilities are many, and schedules are full?

One way is by developing the habit of quick, brief prayers—making prayer our natural response to every situation we encounter throughout the day. Whether in moments of joy, uncertainty, frustration, or decision-making, prayer keeps us connected to God.

Another way is by ordering our lives around God’s desires and teachings so that our very lives become a prayer. When our choices, attitudes, and actions reflect obedience to God, our daily walk becomes an offering to Him.

“Pray without ceasing.”
—1 Thessalonians 5:17

Praying without ceasing does not mean spending every moment on our knees. Rather, it means maintaining a prayerful attitude—an awareness of God’s presence and a continual dependence on Him.

A Prayerful Attitude

A prayerful life is built upon:

  • Acknowledging our dependence on God
  • Recognizing His presence within us
  • Determining to obey Him fully

When we live with this posture, prayer becomes natural. Short, spontaneous prayers flow from our hearts throughout the day—not as a ritual, but as relationship.

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times—on every occasion and in every season—in the Spirit.”
—Ephesians 6:18

This kind of prayer keeps us alert, spiritually aware, and connected—not only to God but also to the needs of others. Prayer strengthens our ability to intercede and persevere.

It is important to remember that a prayerful attitude is not a substitute for intentional, regular times of prayer. Instead, it should be the outgrowth of a life already grounded in prayer.

Prayer: Our Greatest Resource

Prayer is the believer’s most powerful resource. Through prayer, we commune with God, draw on His strength, and experience outcomes far greater than we could accomplish on our own.

Too often, prayer is treated as a last resort—something we turn to only when all else fails. But this approach is backwards. Prayer should be first, because God’s power is infinitely greater than ours.

“Seek the Lord and His strength.”
—1 Chronicles 16:11

God not only invites us to rely on Him—He encourages it.

A life fully surrendered to Christ is a life anchored in prayer. When we pray, we acknowledge that we cannot do this life alone—and we were never meant to.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, we recognize that without You nothing is possible—not even our ability to pray without ceasing. Help us to remain willing and ready to pray in all situations, whether in moments of joy or in seasons of struggle. Teach us to understand that You desire to commune with us, to walk closely with us, and to hear our hearts.

Help us to live lives of prayer, so that we may remain continually connected to You and fully surrendered to Your will. May our dependence on You deepen, and may our relationship with You grow stronger each day.

In the name of the Lord Jesus,
Amen.
